The City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality manages the local governance of Johannesburg, the largest city in South Africa. It operates various branches and departments to provide services to the city’s residents. Johannesburg generates a significant amount of waste annually, and there’s a need to increase waste diversion from landfill sites.

Key Responsibilities:

As a General Worker in Street Cleaning (EPWP), your responsibilities will include:

  • Litter picking, street sweeping, removing stickers and pamphlets from street furniture, poles, and road signs.
  • Cleaning informal settlements.
  • Assisting with clean-up campaigns in partnership with City Departments.
  • Loading waste onto trucks.
  • Distributing refuse bags/bin liners at informal settlements.
  • Identifying, removing, and cleaning illegal dumping hotspots.
  • Clearing spillages when bag breakage occurs.
  • Reporting all incidents related to safety, equipment, and injuries to the supervisor.
  • Conducting environmental education and awareness in communities.

Requirements:

To be eligible for this position, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Applicants must be residents of the City of Johannesburg.
  • Proof of residence in the City of Johannesburg is needed for homeowners.
  • Non-homeowners must provide an affidavit confirming their place of residence.
  • Must be able to read, communicate, and carry out instructions.
  • Successful candidates may be subjected to vetting if necessary.
  • Ability to use the prescribed position tools of trade (broom/litter picker/rakes, etc.).
  • Ability to communicate in local languages applicable to the wards.
  • Team player who follows instructions.
