Job Title: Online Teaching Assistant (Independent Contractor)

Monthly Remuneration R16 292.80

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of a Master’s degree in the subject you want to tutor or a PhD in Accounting Sciences.
  • Registration with a Professional Body (e.g., SAICA, CIMA, CIA) is an advantage.

Contractual Status:

  • Independent Contractor (not considered an employee).
  • No entitlement to benefits like medical, office space, equipment, or leave.

Infrastructure:

  • You must provide your own computer, internet access, and office-related equipment.

Location:

  • You will not be based at a UNISA campus or any location linked to the university.

Work Hours:

  • You must work a minimum of 20 hours per week.
  • Work hours should be spread over most days of the week.
  • Tasks include marking assignments, interacting with students on discussion forums, sending emails, etc.

Duties: Teaching Assistants (TAs) will have various responsibilities, including:

  1. Dedicating a minimum of 20 hours per week to TA tasks.
  2. Familiarizing themselves with the course content.
  3. Reviewing and providing feedback on study content and assessments.
  4. Attending online training.
  5. Contributing to the TA support site and assisting fellow TAs.
  6. Mentoring new TAs.
  7. Contributing content or assessment questions as requested.
  8. Supporting and guiding approximately 250 assigned students.
  9. Facilitating online student discussion forums.
  10. Participating in grading and quality assurance.
  11. Providing personalized feedback to students.
  12. Responding to student queries within 24 to 48 hours.
  13. Interacting with the lead lecturer as directed.
  14. Fulfilling ad-hoc administrative tasks related to the TA role.

Competencies, Skills, and Attributes:

  • Availability to work a minimum of 20 hours per week.
  • Access to the internet at your own cost.
  • Advanced computer skills, including Microsoft Excel and Teams.
  • Commitment to meeting deadlines and a passion for student-centered learning.
  • Excellent communication skills and proficiency in English (all communication is text-based).
  • Former UNISA student experience is an advantage.
  • Teaching experience is a plus.
  • Willingness to undergo compulsory myunisa training on various aspects of tutoring.
